Peter Hewitt

Peter Hewitt

10 May 1936 – 17 September 2009

The College community was shocked and greatly saddened to learn of the untimely death of Peter Hewitt last Thursday.  He will be missed by all those staff, students and Governors who knew him.  Peter’s connections with education in March are legendary, first through his years of teaching at March Grammar School which he joined in 1959, becoming Head of History, then in his role of Vice Principal at the Neale-Wade until his retirement from teaching in 1994.  Since his retirement, Peter kept up a full and active role supporting the College as a Governor, later to become Vice Chair and Chair of Finance.  He also served as a member of the March Educational Foundation.

In addition, he supported numerous organisations and activities throughout the town, including music, Performing Arts, March Museum, Eastern Arts, Whitemoor Prison, March Churches and the Workers Education Association for whom he lectured on a voluntary basis throughout his life, and in recognition of which he was awarded the MBE in 2007.

Peter’s energy, drive and enthusiasm were always in evidence and much respected. His reflections upon issues of importance or merely the mundane were always valued by colleagues and friends alike. In his time an inspirational teacher, who never lost sight of the needs of those he worked with, empowering many to achieve in a wide variety of ways. A mild mannered man, who nevertheless on occasions when he felt an injustice had been committed, was quick to champion a just cause.

Over time, Peter’s determination to contribute and get things done was never diminished. As a Governor, he was currently working closely with the college and the local authority on the Building Schools for the Future Project, which will see a completely new vision for education in March. His contribution to this process was uniquely valuable and a tribute to his flexibility of mind and vast experience which he always devoted to the support of others.

It can be said of many, that they will be greatly missed, and in Peter’s case this is undoubtedly true. March will be poorer for his passing.
